Another case of Lyme disease in a young dog this week.  We are still seeing lots of ticks as well.  We recommend Lyme disease vaccines for dogs and effective tick control.

A recent news report indicates that Lyme disease carrying ticks seem to be spreading in the Bedford area.  Previously confined to the Admiral's Cove/Eaglewood area, this latest tick was confirmed to be from the Doyle Street area.  Ask our staff how to protect your dog.  http://www.cbc.ca/canada/nova-scotia/story/2010/08/17/ns-tick-problem-spreads.html

We had an overwhelming response to our request for donations to assist in earthquake relief.  Thanks to our clients and other members of the community, we raised over $2000.00!!!  This was donated to the Red Cross.  Also, thanks to members of the media, specifically CBC radio and Q104 for announcing the fundraising effort.

In response to the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti yesterday, we are offering nail trims in support of the Red Cross relief effort.  Nail trims will be done for $15.  One-hundred percent of the money raised will be donated.  Please help!

Also be aware that the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association is placing its Canadian Veterinary Reserve in stand-by alert status to be ready to deploy to Haiti if requested by the government of Canada. The CVR consists of a roster of 400 mainly private practice, volunteer veterinarians from across Canada.  The CVR works in partnership with governments to provide medical expertise for animals in large-scale disasters and emergencies.  CVR Reservists can provide a broad range of disaster veterinary medical services including emergency care and assessment for food and companion animals on a mass casualty basis.

Summer weather means vacations and more outside fun with our furry friends.  It also means there are a few potential hazards to be aware of.  Be sure all animals have access to shade/shelter and plenty of fresh water to avoid overheating and dehydration.  Do NOT leave your pets in a parked car. Also, be careful of walking your dog on hot asphalt as it can burn the pads.  Animals with light colored hair are at risk of sunburn, especially on the ears.
If you plan to travel with your pet, be sure they are up to date on all recommended vaccinations and are fully protected against fleas, ticks, and worms.  It's a good idea to bring along a health record.  If you plan to board your pet, most kennels require certain vaccinations be up to date, so plan early and check with the kennel.

April, 2009

Spring is finally here!  Although there is still some snow on the ground, it is time to start thinking about parasite control for your dog or cat.  Worms can be a problem year-round, but warmer weather increases the risks.  Fleas and ticks will soon be returning as well.  Give us a call. Our well-trained staff would be happy to discuss the best options for your pet.
Also, due to the increased prevalence of Lyme disease in Bedford, we are now recommending vaccination for dogs at risk as well as some form of tick control.  Once again, give us a call and our staff would be happy to help.  Go to Lyme disease page
